Behind the Mic: Recent Projects from AJ McKay Creative : Where Boutique Meets Hands-On

One of the best parts of running a boutique voice-over and audio production studio is that no two weeks look exactly alike.
As of August 16, 2026, I’m moving between children’s product campaigns, political advertising, commercial casting, and demo production. The projects are different, but the workflow stays consistent: direct communication, careful casting, thoughtful performance direction, and broadcast-ready audio from start to finish.
That is the difference I offer with a boutique studio. When you work with AJ McKay Creative, you are not sending a brief into a faceless system and hoping the right voice eventually appears. You are working directly with someone that listens, asks questions, makes recommendations, and stays involved.
We've recently been casting more projects that require kids voices. Children’s voice-over and toy work require a very specific combination of qualities. The voice needs to feel natural and energetic without becoming overly performed. The talent has to connect with kids while still sounding clear and trustworthy to parents. Timing, articulation, personality, and the ability to take direction all matter.
That is where a hands-on casting process makes a real difference. We are not simply searching for “a kid’s voice.” We are matching the talent to the campaign’s tone, age range, pacing, and intended audience. The right performance might be playful and curious for one product, while another needs a more conversational, music-friendly delivery.
Our voice-over casting services are built around that kind of targeted search. We have a large, diverse roster of male, female, bilingual, and kid voices around the world, and new talent is continually joining the lineup.
We recently completed voice-over work for several political campaings in Nevada, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and Texas.
With political spots, every word has to land and the performance has to carry the message without sounding forced. Political and advocacy advertising also demands a careful balance. The voice needs authority, clarity, and emotional intelligence, but it still has to sound like a real person speaking to real people.
That balance is part of the work I enjoy most. A strong political read is not just about volume or gravitas. It is about understanding the audience, the stakes of the message, and the exact point where conviction becomes connection.
Once the performance is recorded, the production continues. Editing, noise control, pacing, EQ, compression, and final mix decisions all shape how the spot performs in a digital environment. Clean audio is essential, but the creative choices inside that audio are what help the message stand out.
For agencies and political consultants, our political voice-over services provide a direct path from casting and direction to finished production.
JMC Demos: Nearly a Decade of Collaboration
Our partnership with J. Michael Collins and JMC Demos began in October 2016, and it remains an important part of the work we do.
As Lead Audio Engineer, I continue to collaborate on commercial, promo, narration, political, radio imaging, and other demo categories. We also provide "demo refreshes". A demo refresh is not simply a matter of replacing old spots with new ones. A voice actor’s range, goals, and target market may have changed since the original demo was produced. The copy needs to reflect where the talent is now, not where they were several years ago. The production also needs to showcase performance choices without burying them under unnecessary sound design. A demo should always reflect the work you are after and not the work you already retain.
That requires honest conversations between the actor, producer, copywriter, and engineer. What roles is the talent pursuing? Which reads feel most natural? What does the market currently need? Where can the demo take a creative risk while still remaining useful to casting directors and buyers?
Through AJ McKay Creative and JMC Demos, we take those questions seriously. The goal is a demo that sounds polished, current, and genuinely representative of the actor.
Why Direct Collaboration Still Matters
I have been working as a voice actor, sound designer, audio engineer, and creative producer for more than 30 years. During that time, the tools have changed dramatically. Remote sessions are easier, delivery is faster, and clients can connect with talent almost anywhere.
But the fundamentals have not changed.
Good production still depends on listening. It depends on asking the right questions before recording begins. It depends on knowing when a read needs more energy, less polish, a different regional quality, or simply a little more room to breathe.
AJ McKay Creative has earned recognition through countless awards across voice-over, production, copywriting, mixing, and demo categories. I’m proud of that history, but the award-winning part of the work starts with something much less glamorous: paying attention.
A huge thank you goes to the casting directors, agencies, production houses, consultants, voice actors, and creative partners who trust us with their projects. The finished spot may be short, but the collaboration behind it is anything but impersonal.
