The Demo Production Survival Guide: Everything You Need to Know Before You Hit Record

Your demo is your calling card. It’s your 60-second shot to make someone stop, listen, and remember you. In the world of voice over services, a demo isn’t just a pile of clips. It’s a fast, strategic snapshot of what you sound like, what you sell, and where you fit.

I’ve been on both sides of the glass for decades as a voice actor and producer, and I can tell you this: demo production is equal parts art, prep, and damage control. You’re protecting your voice, your brand, and your time.

Here’s the shorter survival guide for walking into a demo session ready to actually book work.

1. Know What You’re Selling

Before you touch a mic, figure out your lane. If your demo tries to be everything for everyone, it usually ends up sounding unfocused.

Are you the guy-next-door? The confident retail read? The warm narrator? The high-energy automotive voice?

The survival rule: show range inside a category, not randomness. A strong commercial demo feels specific, current, and intentional.

2. Pick Better Scripts

Bad scripts sink good performances. If the copy sounds fake, dated, or overly announcery, your demo will too.

A few simple rules:

  • Keep it conversational. If it doesn’t sound like something a real person would say, rewrite it.

  • Keep it short. Most clips should land around 6 to 10 seconds.

If you want a better sense of what’s working right now, watch tv commercials, listen to radio and digital commercials and get a feel for what's hot and trending.

3. Don’t Ignore the Human Equipment

A lot of actors over-prepare the reads and under-prepare themselves. That’s backwards.

Recording a demo can be a long session, so do the obvious stuff well:

  • Hydrate early. Not ten minutes before the session, but the day before too.

  • Wear comfortable shoes. If you’re standing for hours, physical tension will show up in the read.

  • Bring smart snacks. Skip dairy, keep water nearby, and yes, green apples still help with clicks.

4. Hire People Who Know What They’re Hearing

This is where a lot of DIY demos fall apart. A strong voice with weak production still sounds unfinished.

Demo production is an investment because a producer hears what you miss. An engineer hears the mouth noise, pacing problems, and mix issues that can instantly date a reel. At AJ McKay Creative, we’ve spent years building demos that sound current, competitive, and broadcast-ready, and have won many awards for our quality sound design and mixing.

A good producer will:

  • Push you past the fake polished read

  • Choose music and sound fx that fit your tone

  • Keep the demo moving so nothing drags

5. Don’t Overcook the Session

When it’s time to record, don’t show up sounding memorized to death. The read still needs to feel alive.

Trust direction. Sometimes the weird note is the one that unlocks the real performance. If you’re recording remotely, make sure your setup is solid too. We use Source-Connect to keep sessions clean and reliable.

6. Use the Demo Once It’s Done

A finished demo is not a trophy. It’s a tool.

Send it to agents. Put it on LinkedIn. Add it to your website and email signature. If your demo is more than two years old, there’s a good chance it already sounds dated.
